1. Open a New document in Illustrator. Using a thick font, I used the font Impact, I chose red for the color. Type your text. Go to TYPE, CREATE OUTLINES.

2. Duplicate the layer with the red text. Hide the top layer, select the bottom layer. Change the color to blue.

3. Select the text and Go to EFFECT, PATH, OFFSET PATH. With the blue text still selected go to OBJECT, EXPAND APPEARANCE. Then go to WINDOW, PATHFINDER. In the Pathfinder window click on MERGE.

4. While holding the Shift Key and Alt Key (PC) or Option Key (MAC) drag a copy to the upper left corner. And then Press CTRL-D (PC) or CMD-D (MAC) duplicate multiple times.

5. With the blue text still selected go to WINDOW, PATHFINDER. In the Pathfinder window click on ADD to SHAPE and then EXPAND.

6. With the direct selection tool select a zigzag diagonal area except for the beginning and end.

7. Delete the selected points and Press CTRL-J (PC) or CMD-J (MAC) to connect the end and beginning points. Apply the same technique to the other zigzag diagonal areas.

8. Show the top red layer. There you have the 3D effect.
